Cheap and Easy Spinach

Today's tip comes straight from my DH. If ever there is a time I'm not sure he is supportive of my blogging, he comes to me with something like this. Wednesday he called me (as he always does) in the middle of the day just to say hi. While we were talking he says this: "Hey, next time you are sharing a frugal tip with your blog readers, I have one for you to share." Is that cute or what?

Ok, so the tip... How many of you love spinach? (5 years ago I would have thought I were crazy for such a question.) I love to add baby spinach (the fresh kind from the produce department) to lots of things... when we have it I go 50/50 with it and lettuce in our salads, add it to sandwiches instead of lettuce, and a number of other things. It is a highly nutritious dark green leafy vegetable! Yum! Try it in a wrap... I put whatever moistener down first on the tortilla, then line it with spinach leaves and add the rest of the stuff... YUM!

The problem with baby spinach (which we usually buy when it's on sale for 2 bags for $5, is that I usually end up throwing some of it away. And... it's not cheap to be throwing away. :(

DH suggests going to the salad bar (if your store has one). I don't remember the figures, but we checked it out and it is cheaper per pound to make your self a salad at the salad bar than it is to buy bagged lettuce, and just as easy! Perk number 2... You can get just as much as you think you'll need! Fill that container with just spinach if you want! No more throwing spinach away!

I'd love to hear about it if anyone tries it. We haven't yet, but plan to this next week!

DH stands for dear husband. I'm not real creative with picking nick names for my family, so I use the boring old DH for my husband and DS for my son. :) I guess I'll use DD for my daughter when she is born in March... unless I get creative before then. :) Thanks for asking!
