Upcycled Petticoat

I've posted about this cute petticoat before... isn't it sweet?  I love the bright white eyelet!!

You'd never know that it's made out of an up-cycled, old, worn, crib sheet!

Unless you one day asked why it wasn't all white.

Which you probably wouldn't because of this cute white ribbon we put at the bottom as an accent.

We made two of them.  One longer for sticking out of long skirts and dresses.  One for the slightly shorter skirts and dresses that she almost can't wear anymore (it's for those skirts we made the petticoats... they add some length).

And they'll add warmth in the winter too!

Oh, and we got two pair of these cute bloomers out of the sheets too!  With some to spare!!!  I love turning waste into something, not only practical, but pretty!!

Catching up on some Sewing

Ok... so I mentioned that my mom was here.  I mentioned that we'd been sewing.  So here I am to report on a little of what is now finished... at least finished enough to wear. :)  This was my list of things to sew for Sweet Pea that never got done before the baby was born... and never since.  (Thanks mom for helping me catch up!)

Isn't this dress sweet???  (Butterick 3762)

I picked out the fabric and pattern last year, but then the sewing machine was broken... you understand.  I made a green dress from the same pattern last year.  This one's even cuter!

Especially when my mom put these cute little flowers on the collar.

And the sleeves!

Another of the projects on my to do list was a couple slips.  We needed a little something to lengthen shorter dresses, and to make a couple more see through fabrics a bit more opaque.  Not to mention they'll add warmth in the winter.  (McCall's 4505)
And what little girl isn't adorable with a bit of eyelet peeking out from beneath her dress???

Can I tell you a secret???  The slips aren't white.  Oh, the eyelet is... but not the slip.  We made them out of old (three cheers for upcycling!!!) crib sheets that were far from the original white.  Three babies far!  With my little Belle, we decided it was time for new ones.

Can you see that little bow at coming from above the eyelet trim???

It's attached to a little white ribbon mom sewed around the whole thing about 1/8 above the white eyelet.  It makes the whole thing look deliberate.  Love that!

Then there's the bloomers... love me some bloomers!  Aren't they sweet.  Also made from old crib sheets! (Also McCall's 4505)
There's another longer pair for winter... but it's not quite finished.

 Anyone guess what this was???

It's a bathing suit!  Isn't it cute??  Complete with ruffle around the neck...

 and little leggings.

 I'm thrilled she likes it!

The next test is going to be whether it works in the pool next week. :)

No pattern for this one.  We kind of came up with our own pattern.

Do you sew for your kids???  I'd love to see!

We've been busy

My mom left today.  It was a great couple of weeks.  Games every night.  Sewing every day.  And lots of playing with kids and doing my dishes (this was her schedule, not mine).

I'm hoping to share some of the sewing we got done, but I don't have any pictures of it yet.  Just to wet your appetite (and to encourage me to finish it), I did take one picture this evening... just for you!

I need purple thread before I can finish it up and we can't get that until Tuesday, so you'll have to wait to see the rest.

Anyone have ideas what it is???  (Mom, you can't play!)

Hundred Acre Wood Baby Shower... and giveaway!

It used to be that there was a woman who was in charge of planning all the showers, etc. for people in our church.  She did our baby shower almost six years ago and it was great!  I always thought it looked like so much fun! But she was already "the one" and she was so much better at it than I would be anyway.

A couple years ago I jumped at a chance to plan a baby shower for a friend and I had a blast.  It was a budget shower, but I thought it turned out cute!

Fast forward to the end of last year.  There were a couple of us pregnant at the same time, myself and another gal, expecting her first.  She needed a shower, but the "shower lady" and her husband had moved to another church where he took an assistant pastorship (or whatever you call it).  I talked with the church secretary about it.  Asked who was doing that now.

No one.

Really??? No one???

I offered (non-nonchalantly) to plan it.  And I mentioned that I'd talk to My Beloved about the ministry.

Fabric garland... tied onto raffia.

"Pooh Corner"... aka the gift table.  Honey at the right were game prizes.

So, back in January, I had the joy of planning a baby shower for a friend of ours.  (And I'm the new "shower lady"... so cool!!!  There's another one next weekend.)

"Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart."  ~ Pooh
Wreath inspiration here.

She had chosen a Winnie the Pooh theme for the nursery since they didn't know boy or girl, so I decided to go with a slightly more sophisticated "Hundred Acre Wood" theme for the baby shower.

"Time for a Little something." ~Pooh
I started with the food table, making the garland at the front and planning the perfect foods.

Hunny Snack Mix

Hunny Wheat Pretzels

"Pooh Sticks"... chocolate dipped pretzels.
Oak Leaf Rice Crispy Treats (also dipped in chocolate... why not?)
Hunny Bee Cupcakes
Aren't they cute??  Mini marshmallows for wings.

And some other sweet things... Kettle Corn.

Chocolate Mousse... again, why not???

Ribbon accented half pint jars in brown, yellow and white serve as cups.

I was stumped on the center piece until I found the split peas in the supply closet.  I found some pretty glasses in the kitchen and filled them up.  The honey sticks were also the party favors.  I wrapped them with green raffia and added a little note printable that said "Thank you for bee-ing here".  Then I added the Bit O-Honey around the tables too.

One last little detail... the subway art.  I came up with it myself and was really happy with it... except when My Beloved pointed out that Pooh would have spelled it "hunny".  Oh well.  It's fixed now.  I put it out as a decoration on the gift table and then gifted it to the mommy (without the borrowed frame.)

For a game I came up with a bunch of "Pooh Trivia" from the original stories.  It was great because many people know the newer versions of things, but few know the real story!  And store bought bottles of honey were the prizes... very simple!

You can find the printables I used for the shower here.

The Giveaway!
And now... if anyone is interested in the word art (subway art) in that last picture, I'd love to give a few away.  Leave a comment about your favorite party theme (for a kid party, baby shower, bridal shower... or whatever!) and I'll pick a winner next Wednesday.  (That's the day I'm hoping to be nursing again... you can help me pass the time until then!) Winners will get a JPG image to print yourself.  I used a lab to print mine, but you could do it anyway you want.

The Way to a Man's Heart

Over the years my sweet husband has commented about how he'd love it if I made a number of things.  We've been married more than 7 years now and I've yet to touch most of them.  But I'm determined to change that.  I'm done sticking with what I know.  I'm going to branch out.  Add some spice (er... sweetness?) to his life.

So this past week I took a stab at a Banana Cream Pie... without all the "instant" ingredients many recipes call for.  Completely from scratch.  And not just whipped cream on top either... real meringue.

He loved it!  And it was easy!  I'd never tried a cream pie... or the meringue.  Now I've tried both.

And it was sooooo good!

There's half a Lemon Meringue Pie in the fridge now.  Another I'd never tried before.  So much easier than I ever thought.  The meringue didn't turn out as well this time, but it's still really good.  And now I know to be more careful.

I wonder what I'll try next.

My Beloved keeps telling me that it's true... the way to a man's heart really IS through his stomach!

Here's to many more years of winning my man's heart!

Dressin' Up

When our babies are really little, we've always followed the hospital's recommendation to keep them home for the first six weeks.  So for the first six weeks or so of our sweet one's lives, they pretty much live in those infant gowns.  Especially since I was introduced to Elimination Communication! It's just easier.

So I'm just thrilled to be dressing up my little girl and taking her out.  Especially to church.

Problem is, most of the cuteness is hidden in my sling.

This would never do!

So one Saturday, a week or so ago, I realized that I didn't have any cute, girlie headbands for little Belle to wear to church.  If only her head was going to peak out of that sling, there had to be some girlie cuteness on it.  But what to do?

I grabbed some of my pink cotton yarn and started crocheting.  My internet has been iffy (to say the least), so I didn't have a pattern, or anywhere to start really, so I just started.  My first start wasn't working great, so I tore it all out.  Then I started out again.  Perfect!

I got it done in a bit of time late Saturday night and she had it to wear Sunday morning... and most anytime we go out for that matter!

I think I'll make a few more.

Busy hands help to pass the time

At 39 1/2 weeks, I've pretty much given up hope (and I'm okay with it, really) that I'll get ALL the things done on my "to do before baby comes" list.  Some of them I'm not even really working on at the moment.  In the past week I've seen a significant decrease in energy.  If I can't even keep up with the house and meals (and I'm not!), then I really can't be sewing much.

But I can't just do nothing... so I'm reading to the kids, napping, and picking at a few little projects.

One of those "little" projects is this cute hat.  I'd had the actual beanie finished for a few weeks, but I wanted to add some embellishments.  It is, after all, a girl.  So we needed to add some pink... and a flower.  And if you have a flower, and you can find instructions... it really should have a couple leaves too.

Don't you think?

I finally got a few pictures taken today, so I wanted to share them.

Now I just hope it fits her. :)
